I Can Kick Ken Tucker's Ass

Entertainment Weekly columnist and NPR commentator Ken Tucker writes in today's New York Times about his training in krav maga.

This is where I train.

I am older and fatter than Mr. Tucker, and have sufficiently little upper body strength that I still do my pushups on my knees. But I passed my yellow belt test on the first attempt. I'm hoping to test for orange pretty soon. And succeed on the first try.

I know for a fact that Becky can kick people's asses as I have seen her in action during her class. Krav Maga also seems a great way to build confidence and self-esteem as it teaches people how to handle themselves in dodgy situations.

I suspect he didn't have the best attitude going into the whole thing. Once he got his act together and got serious, he managed to earn his yellow belt. I don't see most people having the difficulties he describes with concentration.

I do like this one bit, though: "([The film] "Enough," in which Ms. Lopez learns the [Krav Maga] method to protect herself from Billy Campbell, is to Krav what "Urban Cowboy" was to mechanical-bull riding: it nearly ruined a perfectly pleasant way to hurt yourself and others.)"

The problem for me is keeping life from intervening to keep me out of training. I say as I look up, notice the time, and realize I have to get changed for Krav class. :)

Personally, I'd rather see people shaking their asses on a dance floor than kicking others', but take that orange like you own it, girl!

Rockin' blog, Becks.

Alas, probably no WFC this year...Rob can't escape school and I can't spare the travel time right now. Sorry we will miss you, Tom.

I'm not quite ready to test for orange just yet--but getting there. Meantime, we need more women in the classes! Cathy (level 1) and I (level 2) cheered Terry (level 3) on in her sparring last night...and wondered why there seemed to be only one woman per class level lately. It's not that the guys are hostile or unwelcoming. SEND US YOUR WOMEN!

I think it's critically important that women take Krav, or something like it--something that is not necessarily a martial art, but a practical, effective method of defense from the most common attacks.

I don't know why we don't have more women in class. Speculation on that would be an essay in itself. Part of it is discomfort at entering what feels like a bastion of testosterone; that won't change until we have more women in class. Part of it is the discomfort of admitting that the world is dangerous. Cardiokickboxing doesn't make you conscious of the implication that you could be raped, you could be the victim of domestic violence, you could be mugged.

And getting a yellow or an orange belt isn't what matters. Advanced training isn't what matters. Three one-hour classes could save a woman's life. *One* one-hour class could save a woman's life.

I wish we had more women in class.
